Fortunately no pedestrians or motorists were injured following the incident, which happened on Burton Street, close to the junction with Leicester Street and Sherrard Street.

Shortly after the metal strip of lights came down, Melton Borough Council Tweeted: “We are aware that some of the Christmas lights are down in town at the moment.

“Contractors are on their way to make them safe and fix them.

“Please take extra care for the time being and thank you in advance for your patience.”
