Melton Borough Council elects first Asian Deputy Mayor Tejpal Bains, 26
Councillor Bains (26) became the first Asian male to be elected onto the council, after last year’s elections, representing the town’s Sysonby ward.
It’s also believed he’s achieved another first - becoming the youngest ever Deputy Mayor of Melton.

Hide AdHe was nominated for election by fellow councillor Tom Greenall, another of the younger faces now sitting on the council.
He described councillor Bains as a ‘real champion of young people’ who has a love for the borough.
Seconding the nomination, councillor Alan Pearson said: “He will bring a tremendous vision to the role, a young vision.”
Councillor Bains, who has lived in Melton for the last 20 years, works as a solicitor for Latham & Co. His consort is his mum, Raj.
He said: “It’s an absolute privilege to serve as Deputy Mayor. I look forward to bringing some youth and enthusiasm to the role.”
