As reported by the Melton Times last week, the post office was due to open in the Bargain Booze store in Sherrard Street on Monday afternoon, when staff were due to serve free cupcakes and soft drinks, and hand out gifts to the first 10 customers.

However, this was cancelled just days beforehand.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Melton Mowbray Post Office was unable to reopen as planned, this is due to the IT supplier being delayed.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we would like to reassure customers that we will have the branch open as soon as possible. In the meantime, customers can access services at any alternative branch nearby.”

Once open, the new post office hours will be 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 10pm on Sunday.

The post office is due to relocate to the Bargain Booze store – a controversial decision among some local people – following the closure of the Co-op in Scalford Road, where the facility was based previously.

The store closed in January after 32 years, with 32 people losing their jobs. Nine members of staff were relocated by the Co-op into other stores.

The Melton Times asked the Co-op this week whether the future for the site in Scalford Road had been decided.

A spokesperson from Central England Co-operative said: “Following the closure of our Melton food store, the society has engaged its agents to actively market the site and is hopeful that it will be occupied in the near future.”
