Fire breaks out in Melton supermarket

Customers were evacuated from a Melton supermarket this morning (Monday) after fire broke out in the building.

Two crews of firefighters from the nearby fire station were deployed to Sainsbury’s on Nottingham Road to deal with the incident and they were there for just under an hour.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at around 8.30am from the Sainsbury’s site regarding a doughnut machine on fire in the baking area of the store.

“The store was evacuated and there were no casualties.

“Crews from Melton Mowbray successfully extinguished the fire and the machine was moved outside.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told the Melton Times: “Our Melton Mowbray store was temporarily closed for a brief time earlier today and we are now open as usual.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
