Parking restrictions will be in operation in streets around Melton’s household waste site when it reopens on Monday because of the expected queuing of vehicles.

Lake Terrace tip was closed in March as part of the government’s campaign to limit the spread of Covid-19.

It will be open again on Monday, for seven days a week, but all residents need to pre-book a time slot to visit it and they are advised to bring only limited types of waste considered to be a risk of causing injury or harm if it is stored at home.

People will be restricted as to how many times they can visit the site with only one booking allowed over a 14-day period.

Leicestershire County Council, which is reopening just seven of its sites, including Melton, will impose certain restrictions on parking in the area.

A spokesperson said: “A prohibition of parking is required on Lake Terrace for approximately 200 metres and on Ambleside Way for approximately 35 metres on either sides of the carriageway.”

Residents are advised they can only take along garden waste; wood and chipboard; and non-recyclable household waste such as black bags or items that don’t fit in the wheelie bin.

Hardcore and soil can also be deposited at the site, along with plasterboard, but charges will apply for these items and contactless card payments can be made.

Social distancing guidelines will be observed with a limited number of vehicles allowed in at any one time and appropriate gaps allowed between visitors.

Councillor Trevor Pendleton, county council cabinet member for waste disposal, said: “I want to thank residents for their support around the measures which the council has taken to date, and would welcome their continued support to ensure the arrangements we are putting in place can operate successfully.

“We want our sites to work as efficiently as they can, while prioritising the health and safety of residents and our staff, so I would ask for patience during the first few days of operation.

“Please don’t visit our sites, unless waste is creating an issue at home that could cause injury or harm – and you will need a confirmed booking to be allowed on to the site.”
