New housing scheme would double the size of Asfordby Hill

Objectors say Asfordby Hill would not be able to cope if plans to more than double its population by building up to 100 new homes are allowed to go ahead.

Developers have applied to Melton Borough Council to build the scheme on a greenfield site off Crompton Road.

A mix of maisonettes, terraces, semi-detached and detached dwellings are proposed, with a quarter of them being affordable housing.

More than 20 people have already contacted the council to register concerns about the size of the development and the extra traffic it will generate in a small village.

Resident Charlie Pitt Miller told the Melton Times: “This proposal intends to increase, from the original area, housing and the population of our three roads - Glebe, Crompton and Stanton - by more than 128 per cent and the whole character of the area will be blown out of the water bit by bit.

“School places are also of concern, the projection was that school’s capacity would increase by 17 by January 2021.

“Is this going to provide for children from 100 dwellings?”

Other objectors say the proposed buildings are not in keeping with local houses.

A report prepared by consultants for the applicants, Talavera Estates, states that the proposed development would generate 75 vehicle trips in the morning peak hours and 69 in the evenings, which would see it operate within the design capacity of access roads on to the A6006 Melton Road.

The site is in the Melton Local Plan, the application points out, and two previous schemes there, for a total of 31 new homes, have already been approved.
