Councillor Alan Pearson believes they came from dispensers by the pumps at the BP petrol garage.

He said the issue could cause ‘a major environmental problem’ if it was allowed to continue.

He told the Melton Times: “The Dalby Road side is a major concern as they have been blown into the river.

“The staff have been spoken to by a local resident .

“The problem is the dispenser system on the pump.

“I have contacted BP customer services but to date I have had no response.

“If this system is used around the BP stations
then they will be causing a
major environmental problem.”

The Melton Times did approach BP for comment but received no response at the time of going to press.

We have also been contacted by several readers who are unhappy about people discarding masks and gloves used as protection against the spread of Covid-19.

They have been spotted in the street in the town centre and by the side of roads across the town.

A woman, who declined to be named, said: “I’m disgusted by the amount of used masks and gloves, also rubbish on the grass verge on Leicester Road and along the roadside grass verges as far up as the Eye Kettleby turning.”
