Those taken on will be trained by police officers, staff and cadet leaders and what they learn could lead to career in the force or help them in another field of work.

PCSO Will Ford, unit head for the Melton Cadets, said: “Joining Melton Police Cadets is a brilliant opportunity for our young people to really get involved with their local police force and actively help to make their community a safer place to live.”

Aspiring police officer Finley O’Riordan is in his fourth year as a town police cadet, after joining the unit when it first opened in 2016.

The 18-year-old, who was named the force’s Cadet of the Year last year, said: “The reason I became a police cadet was because I had a passion for public service and hoped to become a police officer.

“Our unit formed a very close and strong bond with eachother straight away, which was recognised when we were awarded Cadet unit of the Year in 2017.

“Every cadet is made to feel welcome and the unit is a highly supportive environment and it is a great way of making new friends across the county too.”

He added: “The skills that you learn as a police cadet are transferable into all aspects of life, and will support you in whichever direction you take.

“I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to support the force at events both in Melton and across the county, such as Pride and at Remembrance Day.

“There are so many possibilities and opportunities that are available to those who become Leicestershire Police Cadets and I would encourage all young people to join.”

The force will be accepting applications until Tuesday March 31, and all applicants must be due to turn 13 by Monday August 31 this year.
