“The driver refused and subsequently began to drive the car while one of the officers was leaning in through the driver’s door.

“The car eventually was stopped and the officer attended the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

“He did not suffer serious injuries and was later discharged from hospital.”

Police say a 21-year-old man, of Melton Mowbray, was arrested and his vehicle was seized in the incident, which happened on Saturday June 13.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, failing to stop, possession with intent to supply class A drugs and driving while unfit through drugs.

The man has since been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing.

Pc Rawlings added: “I’m sure all will join me in wishing the officer well.

“It was a cowardly act by the man which could have resulted in a very serious injury.”
