Murder-accused '˜egged on' ex-officer's killer

Paul Fyfe was 47 when he was killed at a home in Leicester in June 2011.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that Mohammed Hirsi, then 25, delivered the fatal blow to the heart of Mr Fyfe, a father-of-three, in the early hours of June 10.

Ameen Jogee, who was 22 at the time of the killing, is standing trial accused of Mr Fyfe’s murder.

Opening the case against Jogee, prosecutor William Harbage QC, told the court the defendant “egged on” Hirsi while standing on the doorstep of the property in the Rowlatts Hill area of the city.

He told the jury it was accepted that Hirsi “wielded” the knife, but added: “This trial concerns the part played by this defendant and his criminal responsibility.

“We say he is also guilty of murder. He was egging him on by his words and his actions intending to encourage Hirsi, with the requisite intent for murder.”

The court heard Jogee, who was a drug dealer, and Hirsi were frustrated when they arrived at the home of Naomi Reid, a friend of the victim, after being refused entry into another friend’s house.

Miss Reid asked the pair to leave before Mr Fyfe arrived at the house.

They did leave and Reid sent Jogee a text message asking him not to bring Hirsi back to her home again, the jury heard.

Jogee and Hirsi “immediately and quite unnecessarily” returned to Miss Reid’s home by which time Mr Fyfe had arrived, Mr Harbage said.

The court heard Hirsi took a knife from the kitchen and grabbed Miss Reid. Mr Fyfe came downstairs and stood between the pair and asked Hirsi “What are you going to do, stab me?” before the fatal blow was dealt.

Mr Harbage said: “Why did they go back for the third time? What was in their mind? In particular, what was in Jogee’s mind?

“Were they going back for a quiet peaceful chat or to cause trouble?”

Jogee denies murder and the case is expected to last two weeks.
