This sort of activity tends to increase in the run-up to Halloween, which will celebrated on Saturday October 31.

The Melton neighbourhood policing unit said two police community support officers had visited retail businesses to warn them about the dangers of the practice, which can cause injury, distress and criminal damage.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve spoken with store managers and supplied them with a laminated poster, advising against the sale of eggs to youths ⛔️

“This is in response to reports of eggs being thrown recently, as well as trying to put preventative measures in place during the run up to Halloween

“We would like to keep egging incidents this October and November to a minimum, as part of a wider plan to reduce anti-social behaviour.

“We would say to parents that if you have children who go out with their friends in the evening, to please advise them around throwing eggs and not to participate in this activity.”

The police say they will deal with any incidents seriously with the spokesperson adding: “Eggs cause criminal damage to people’s properties and vehicles on impact, which can cost hundreds, or in some cases even thousands of pounds.

“If the egg is not washed off quickly, the acidic liquid of the egg can erode certain materials

“Please advise your children that these incidents do get reported to the police, they will be investigated and perpetrators will be dealt with accordingly.”

Anyone who is the victim of an egging incident in the Melton area is advised to call police on 101.
