Melton paedophile’s jail term to be reviewed by appeal court

The three-year prison sentence recently handed to a Melton paedophile is to be reviewed by the Court of Appeal after an intervention by MP, Alicia Kearns.

Lewis Watts was convicted last month at Leicester Crown Court after being caught by a Leicestershire Police sting operation,

He admitted three counts of sexual communications with a child, attempting to incite a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity and a breach of his sexual harm prevention order.

Watts is a serial offender, having been prosecuted in 2015 for accessing indecent images of underage children; and has been breaching court orders preventing him from contacting children online.

Mrs Kearns felt a stronger sentence should have been issued in relation to his recent offences and she referred the case to the Attorney General.

Very few cases are sent to the court of appeal for sentence review but today (Tuesday), the Solicitor General confirmed that Watt’s case should be.

Mrs Kearns said: “Our children deserve to be safe.

“I referred Lewis Watts’ sentence to the Court of Appeal as I believe the sentence is unduly lenient.

“I now await the outcome of the review.

“I will do all I can to keep our children safe.”
