Leicestershire Police arrest 132 drivers in 'extremely disappointing' winter campaign

Police say it is ‘extremely disappointing’ that they had to arrest 132 motorists in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland in December during their annual festive season drink-drive campaign.

The county forces say 85 of the drivers detained were drink-drivers, 35 were over the limit for drugs and 12 failed to provide a specimen for testing.

Officers report that 47 of the arrests were made following a road collision and that 24 were detained during daylight hours, between 8am and 5pm.

Young drivers also flouted the drink/drug-drive laws, with 30 of those arrested being aged 24 or under.

Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership said: “It is extremely disappointing that so many drivers chose to ignore our advice and made the wrong choice to get behind the wheel while over the limit and now face the prospect of starting 2026 with a criminal conviction.”

Police say 58 motorists were arrested on urban roads in the city and 74 in rural areas, with the most (18) being 18 in Charnwood district.

Leicestershire Police patrols will continue to operate around the clock, with officers pledging to detain those drivers who are unfit behind the wheel to ensure our roads are safe for everyone.

If you see someone who appears to be a drink or drug driver enter a vehicle to drive away, make a note of the registration plate and the direction of travel and call police on 101 or make a make a free and anonymous call to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
