How CCTV and video doorbells are helping reduce crime in Melton
Police in Melton have hailed the success of a new strategy aimed at protecting local businesses and reducing crime.
Op Better was launched in response to sharp rise in burglaries from shops with business owners being issued with CCTV systems and video doorbells to help deter offenders.

Officers have also worked in partnership with Melton Borough Council and other agencies to clamp down on drug-fuelled criminal activity in the town.
Arrests have been made as a result of the new operation with connections identified to organised crime across a wider area.
The Melton Neighbourhood Policing Team posted on their Facebook page: “It soon became clear that many of those responsible were affected by drug misuse, linked to county lines activity in the area.
“Working collectively, the Op Better team carried out multiple warrants, seized drugs and arrested those involved in supplying substances within our community.
“Alongside this, partnership work with Melton Borough Council and other agencies resulted in closure orders on properties known for drug dealing, as well as enhanced tenancy agreements to promote safer neighbourhoods.”
Officers have also visited properties where the occupant is suspected of being cuckooed – this is where a is a home taken over by criminals, often by exploiting a vulnerable resident, and used for illegal activity such as drug dealing and storage.
“The Op Better team used a tiered approach, beginning with safeguarding the occupant by referring them to partners who could help address issues like drug use or financial vulnerability,” officers added in their post.
“Regular visits were carried out, and in some cases partial closure orders were issued, allowing the occupant to remain in the property but preventing any visitors.
“To ensure long term support, referrals were made to Turning Point and other local drug and alcohol services, helping individuals access the help they need.
“Op Better has successfully reduced retail crime by addressing its root causes, showing what can be achieved through innovation, commitment and partnership working.”
Melton’s neighbourhood officers, who are based at the station on King Street, say they will continue to target suspect individuals and addresses in an attempt to make residents safer.
