The plants, which are believed to have been found in a house in the Saxby Road area of the town, posed a major fire risk because of the heat used to grow them, officers say.

Pc Davey Rawlings, of the Melton and Rutland Neighbourhood Policing Area, posted on the force’s Facebook page: “Officers followed their nose to a location in the town and identified what they believed was a cannabis grow.

“Found within was hundreds of cannabis plants with a potential yield of well over £100,000.

“The grow has been disposed of and an investigation is underway.”

Photographs taken at the scene show burn marks on the electrics and officers say a fan was pointed at the connection to try and cool it down.

The electricity at the property was found to have been ‘bypassed’ and Pc Rawlings said it was ‘ready to pop’.

Pc Rawlings added: “This grow was so dangerous, this and the attached property could have been up in flames.

“Forgetting the negative side effects of smoking cannabis, think about how it is produced and the lives that are put at risk just so someone can have a smoke.”

Leicestershire Police, who said the grow was found on May 4 by officers walking past and being alerted to a smell of cannabis coming from the property, said no-one has been arrested so far in connection with the find and that enquiries are ongoing.
