A46 Thrussington crossroads is clearly shown to be county's worst speeding hotspot following freedom of information request

Leicestershire's worst speeding hotspot has been clearly revealed to be the A46 Thrussington crossroads (southbound) - a freedom of information request by a leading road safety charity has found.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) asked all police forces in Britain to give the location and speed of their top five highest recorded cases, captured on safety cameras, from January 1, 2015 to January 30, 2016.

Data supplied by Leicestershire Police showed the A46 Thrussington crossroads (70mph limit) as the site for the top six speeding cases. On these occasions drivers were caught speeding between 110 and 124mph.

The next worst county spot (joint fifth) was the M1 between junctions 21A and 21 (110mph in 50mph zone).

IAM chief executive officer Sarah Sillars said: “Exceeding the limit to such a degree is potentially suicidal, not to mention incredibly dangerous for other road users. Clearly these drivers don’t see the potential consequences. If we’re going to change this mindset personalised sentencing options need to be made available.”
