Bypass campaigners sound note of caution

The cash was earmarked earlier this month to, effectively, fund research into the eastern distributor road, which wouldlink the A607 Grantham road and Melton Spinney Road with the A606 Burton Road, with a projected aim of building it by December 2022.

Money from developers would fund the remaining sections of the bypass.

But Melton North Action Group launched a campaign calling for no new homes to be built until the financing is agreed and the bypass is built because it feels the current infrastructure is inadequate to support major new housing development in the town.

Member Brian Hodder said the government business case cash was merely for research and did not mean a bypass was ‘done and dusted’.

He said: “This research will take five years to resolve with many landowners and their lawyers trying to agree terms.”

He urged Melton borough residents to sign the action group’s online petition at www.petition.parliament.uk/petitions/172505 if they want parliament to debate if a bypass should be built before any new housing developments.
