With 281 exhibits, visitors and entrants at the 21st Stathern Horticultural Show were treated to some inspiring displays despite the poor weather earlier in the growing season.

The event, held in St Guthlac’s Church, was well attended by both children and adults. Those attending enjoyed games, a tombola, gin raffle, grand prize draw, Ploughman’s lunches, a cake stall and a jazz ensemble.

The winner of the prestigious cup for fruit and vegetables was Colin Ramsay. The children’s section winner was Jack Bloor, and the Shirley Keir Cup for the children’s best exhibit in show was awarded to Ellie Bloor.

The show combined the best of fruit and vegetables, with flowers, art and craft exhibits. This year, in conjunction with Stathern School, all the children designed a flag, based on the Olympics theme, for display in the church with prizes for the best in each year group.

The judges were Jeff Dale, Gillian Deave, Margery Leyland, Merrin Canning, Jim Codrington and Kate Jordan. Matthew Lee, headteacher of Stathern School, presented the prizes and cups after the auction of produce conducted by Sally Fagan.

Melton Mowbray Building Society, C&C Plants of Scalford and Melton EMP Accident Repair Centre provided sponsorship for the event.

The show committee thanked everyone for their contributions, support and effort.

The main results were:

Cup for fruit and vegetables - Colin Ramsay, Sue Wadsworth Culinary Cup - Gillian Deave, WI Cup for floral section - Mary Briant.

Handicraft Cup - Joan Bray, Art Cup - Christine Griffiths, The Martin Fagan Photography Shield - Sarah Porter, children’s photography award - Hugh King.
