Statement garden pieces proved particularly popular with a pair of Corinthian carved limestone capitals, which are thought to be Roman, selling for £1,700.

Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “This sale exceeded all expectations and showed the desire to own items from a quintessentially English country house has enduring appeal, especially among Americans and Canadians who flocked to place bids online.”
