Here comes the Cavalry!

A spectacular performance of the world-renowned Musical Ride by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment will be one of the highlights of Sunday's open day at Melton's Defence Animal Centre.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the annual event where the organisation, which trains dogs and horses for the military, throws its door open to the public.

Activities, displays and demonstrations at the Asfordby Road centre will run from 10am until 4pm, with the Household Cavalry due to perform at 2.25pm.

Commanding Officer, Lt Col Mark Morrison, said: “We are all looking forward to our open day.

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase what we do and the soldiers really enjoy talking to people about their work and their animals.

“It’s just one of the many events that will be taking place across the UK that weekend as people come together to celebrate our Armed Forces.”

Visitors to the open day will also be able to enjoy music by The Band of The Royal Engineers, who will enter the arena at 12.30pm.

There will be working dog demonstrations from the CanineTraining Squadron, of the Defence Animal Training Regiment, who are based there and responsible for training all the military working dogs.

Visitors can also watch tent pegging and mounted sports demonstrations, plus a dog and duck display team.

Refreshments will be available to buy but visitors are invited to bring their own picnics.

No dogs other than assistance dogs will be allowed on the site.
