New Melton sensory play space to open for young children and SEND youngsters

A new sensory play centre opens in Melton Mowbray tomorrow (Saturday) for babies, young children and youngsters with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Mum-of-three Kate Spicer is opening Every Little Sense, in the town’s Bowley Court shopping precinct, with sessions available from Monday through to Saturday.

Kate, who is a former teacher at Melton’s Birch Wood Area Special School, wants to create a community feel at the centre, which also has a little cafe serving hot drinks and cakes.

She told the Melton Times: “Sensory play is so important – it is the cornerstone of learning.

"There are so many children locally who need a place like this and I’ve had some really nice feedback on it so far.”

Children aged from babies to four are welcome to attend and SEND youngster of any age, if Kate is able to meet their needs.

The centre is a warm, welcoming space with lots of activities around the room aimed at stimulating the senses of the children and engage them in play.

"I wanted to create somewhere all children and parents feel safe and included,” said Kate.

"It is a big thing when SEND children have a change of routine so it is important they feel comfortable and included and they will be here.”

Kate believes parents will also enjoy attending the centre, as a social outlet as well as somewhere their children will benefit from being.

She explained: “As a parent you feel isolated and I can’t imagine how a SEND parent feels.

"This centre is somewhere for them to come to chat with other parents and enjoy a coffee and a cake and while their children play.”

The SEND sensory play sessions will be held after school and Saturday mornings to give parents flexibility on when they can bring their children along.

Kate is starting with a small number of children tomorrow and she is confident it will grow as word spreads in the community.

"This is an ideal location, being in the town centre and in a quiet little shopping area and I would like to expand if there is demand for it,” she added.
