Santa Claus is coming to town

Melton Mowbray & District Round Table members have been busy brushing down the reindeers and readying the famous red suit as Santa arrives in the Melton borough this week.

The active voluntary club is inviting families from across the Melton area to see Santa and his sleigh from tomorrow (Tuesday) until December 23, as in previous years.

However, this year everyone will be wearing PPE, there will be no door knocking, members will be socially distanced and the numbers of helpers will be minimised.

More than 100 Round Table groups from across the country spend over 1,000 nights throughout December with their various Santa sleigh vehicles raising money for local causes and charities as well as bringing Christmas spirit to the local community.

This year’s Melton Mowbray Santa sleigh will kick-off in Wymondham tomorrow at 6pm and will also cover the following:

Thursday - East Goscote;

Sunday - Long Clawson, Hose and Harby;

Wednesday - Old Dalby and Nether Broughton;

December 19 - Asfordby Village, Asfordby Valley and Asfordby Hill;

December 20 - roads at top of Scalford Road in Melton Mowbray;

December 23 - Whissendine.

Table chairman Ian Ringrose said: “This year has been particularly difficult for everyone, we hope to put some smiles on peoples’ faces.

“The team have worked tirelessly to plan our nights to be Covid safe, plus we have added some additional routes to our schedule.

“Our previous Santa sleighs have helped us to raise much-needed funds for local charities and we are keen to continue to show our support and this year do even more!

“We are keen to support local food banks, support mental wellbeing, Rainbows Hospice and local schools.”

He added: “A big thank you to everybody who donates to our sleigh collections this year - you will make an incredible difference to the lives of those who receive the money.”
