Work is starting to install a completely new kitchen area, update the toilets for both disabled and able-bodied members, and greatly improve the entrance area.

The money for the renovations at the Asfordby Road branch HQ and Tornado Club comes from a grant from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust (AFCFT).

And it should be complete in time for RAFA to celebrate its 50th anniversary of being based at the venue.

Branch chair Paul Davies said: “When it was suggested to us in early 2019 that the AFCFT grant scheme could benefit us here in Melton by improving the premises to further the aims of the association, we felt it was something we should go for.

“When completed it will be a brilliant achievement by those involved to provide for those who need the help, friendship, social interaction, welfare, etc, that the association can provide.”

Club chairman Frances Tatlow added: “It’s great that the AFCFT have been so generous with this grant, and we are very grateful for the opportunity that it provides.

“I am looking forward to reopening the club and all our members enjoying our new facilities. I foresee some exciting events in our future with the new kitchen facilities.”

The work starts this month and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of May.

A grand reopening is planned depending on Covid restrictions.
