Officers are aware of local residents using Nitrous Oxide Canisters, which give a short-lived high but can have serious side-effects.

They warn that the use of such materials can lead to unconsciousness or death but also have the capacity to induce loss of blood pressure, fainting and heart attacks.

A Melton Police spokesperson said: “It has been brought to our attention that people may be using Nitrous Oxide Canisters, otherwise known as ‘Laughing Gas’, in the Melton borough area.

“Nitrous Oxide is designed for industry purposes and has legitimate uses in powering whipped cream chargers, but some people misuse this.

“The desired effects are short lasting and the risks are dangerous.”
