Melton Council makes order to protect historic St Mary's Hospital buildings from immediate demolition
Melton Council has placed a special planning order on two historic buildings at the town's St Mary's Hospital site meaning they can't be demolished without the granting of planning permission.
The Article 4 direction has been placed on the central block of the 1836 former workhouse (pictured above), which was designated Grade II listed status in 1976 but was de-listed by English Heritage in 2001, and the vagrant cells.
As previously reported in the Melton Times the site is being marketed for sale by NHS Property Services, having declared the land and buildings as surplus. It had challenged the council’s proposal to make the order and has warned the authority of its potential liability to pay compensation, in certain circumstances, associated with the direction.
