Abigail Eaves, a year six pupil at the town’s St Francis Primary School, decided to help the Little Princess Trust after reading about it in her grandfather’s newspaper.

She has so far raised more than £900 by being to sponsored to get 16 inches of her long hair cut off by stylist Lisa at Elliott Hair Design. on Church street.

Her cut hair has also been donated to the charity - it needs 12 inches of clean hair and five different people’s hair are then mixed into one wig. Abigail said: “I thought that it was a good idea because other people would not want to be without hair because of having cancer and I can give them some of mine.

“When I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve been growing my hair ever since I was born.

“One bonus is that washing my hair is seriously quick now.”

She added: “I have raised over £900 and I’m amazed at how many people have sponsored me.

“I never thought I’d raise enough for one wig and I’ve nearly raised enough for two.”

Her parents, Neil and Paula, were gushing with pride at their little girl’s fundraising act.

Neil said: “We couldn’t be more proud of Abigail.

“It’s such a selfless thing to do for others, particularly when her hair has been such an important part of her appearance for so long.

“Apart from having the ends trimmed, she’s never had it cut so it’s been a massive change for her.

“She knows that her hair will grow again if she wants to have long hair but that some children don’t have that opportunity because of their condition. “She knows that donating her hair to others will mean that they can feel more confident about themselves and feel able to go out in public without being starred at.”
