The invitation was made today by the clinical commissioning groups of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and applies to people living in both counties in these priority groups.

The local NHS is offering 1,000 appointments a day and is very keen to ensure that all eligible people who have not yet had a vaccine invitation have a chance to book this week.

Up to now, the health authority has told residents to wait until they are invited for a vaccine jab.

The government aims to vaccinate the top four priority groups across the UK by the middle of February.

A spokesperson for the local CCGs said: “Eligible patients should book an appointment as soon as possible to be vaccinated in the next seven days.

“Members of the public are also encouraged to share this information with eligible patients who may not yet have been vaccinated.”

Go to www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/patients/covid-19-information-hub/covid-19-vaccination to book a vaccine jab.

When they attend their vaccination appointment, people must have with them photographic ID and proof of eligibility, such as a current shielding letter, on arrival.

The government said today that 6.6million people in the UK have now had at least their first Covid jab - most will have to wait 12 weeks for their second booster injection.

A total of 78.7 per cent of all those aged 80 and over have had the vaccine in the UK now.
