That sad news was released this afternoon (Wednesday) by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The most serious cases across Leicestershire are treated at city hospitals.

A trust spokesperson said: “Sadly, we can confirm that a total of 793 patients being cared for at our hospitals, and who had tested positive for COVID-19, have died.

“45 of those deaths have been announced since last Wednesday (December 30).

“The ages of the patients ranged between those in their 40s to those in their 90s.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the patients at this very difficult and distressing time.”

Government figures show that 70 people who lived in the Melton borough have died after returning a positive Covid test since the pandemic began nearly 10 months ago.
