The budget airline has agreed a deal with two private testing firms, meaning travellers will be able to get a test at a cheaper rate.

Tests from £75

Easyjet customers will be able to buy a home testing kit from Confirm testing for £75, or from CityDoc for £100.

These tests are offered at a discounted rate, with the retail price normally £119 and £185, respectively. A test in a clinic is also available through CityDoc for £150. This normally costs £200.

Testing has now become a requirement for entry to several of Easyjet’s most popular holiday destinations, including Spain, Italy and Germany.

The cut-price tests mark a step forward in helping to get the travel industry up and running again, along with the reduced quarantine later this month.

From 15 December, people who arrive in England from high-risk countries will be able to end their self-isolation period early if they receive a negative test that is taken five days after they land.

Easyjet chief executive, Johan Lundgren, said, “I’m really pleased to be able to offer our customers convenient testing options at cheaper rates than are widely available on the market.

“This, coupled with the news that quarantine can be reduced with a negative test, is a key step towards travel getting back to normal.

“We continue to push for testing the efficacy of rapid testing technologies like antigen and Lamp testing which could be undertaken on departure at the airport and for further reducing quarantine, making it easier and less onerous for people to travel.”

20% capacity

Easyjet has said it expects to fly no more than around 20 per cent of its planned capacity for the rest of this year, due to ongoing travel restrictions.

The company also recently recorded its first annual loss in its history by £1.27 billion.

However, improvements in testing and the possibility of a vaccine rollout in the coming weeks or months marks welcome news for the struggling travel industry. A coronavirus testing facility opened at Gatwick Airport on 1 December, allowing passengers and airport staff to get a test for £60 each, and the general public for £99.
