Covid cases in Melton borough rise by 88 in last week

There was a weekly increase of 88 new Covid-19 cases across Melton borough in a major spike for the area.

New figures show 171 positive tests being reported in the borough in the seven days to Saturday.]

That makes it 789 people in the area have had coronavirus since the pandemic began in March and a total of 32 people in the borough have died from a Covid-related death.

Melton’s infection rate, per 100,000 population, is now 334 - compared to 402 in Oadby and Wigston and 339 in Blaby, which are the only two Leicestershire districts now with higher rates.

There are 24 new Covid deaths reported today at Leicester hospitals, where the most serious cases are treated.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals Leicester said: “Sadly, we can confirm that 508 patients being cared for at our hospitals, and who had tested positive for Covid-19, have died.

“24 of those deaths have been announced since November4.

“The ages of the patients ranged between those in their 50s to those in their 90s.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the patients at this very difficult and distressing time.”
