How playtimes are being transformed at village primary school
Pupils at Great Dalby Primary School are enjoying getting involved in a new initiative which is transforming playtimes.
All the children are taking part in the ‘Great Play’ concept where they take on meaningful challenges to help them develop as individuals.

Headteacher, Jenny Hanks, who describes the concept as ‘a bright new chapter’ for the school, told the Melton Times: “From mud kitchens to small‑world zones, trim trails and a Restful Retreat, pupils now enjoy a range of engaging play areas that encourage creativity, confidence and collaboration.
“The initiative is built around our values 'Caring, Achieving and Persevering' and the belief that Play is Powerful.

Jenny said Great Play helps children to spot and handle challenges, by building awareness, safety, and care for themselves and others, and to make brave but safe choices, achieving new things while keeping everyone safe.
It also assists pupils to grow stronger and more confident so they can develop resilience, problem‑solving and perseverance.
“A team of trained Great Play Leaders now supports playtimes by organising zones, encouraging safe and fair play and sharing feedback to keep improving the experience for all pupils,” added Jenny.
The school, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary of being founded this year, is hosting its annual fair on Saturday June 6, from 11am to 3pm.

Families are invited to send photos or memories of their time at the school, as a pupil or a parent, to form part of a celebratory exhibition.
Great Dalby is also hosting an Open Gardens and Scarecrow Trail around the village on June 6, from 11am to 3pm. Tea, coffee and cake will be served in the village hall.
