Dozens of Melton school students told to stay at home due to heating issue

Dozens of students at a Melton Mowbray secondary school have been told to stay at home again tomorrow (Tuesday) due to ongoing heating problems in one of the buildings.

Parents of those in Years seven, eight and nine at John Ferneley College were told, via email and the school’s Facebook page last night, not to come in today and an updated message has gone out this afternoon.

Those KS3 students have now been asked to stay at home again tomorrow while engineers work on fixing the issue at the Scalford Road school, which is part of Mowbray Education Trust.

Today’s update reads: “We will remain closed to all KS3 students (Years 7-9) on Tuesday January 13.

"As we did for today, we will be asking all staff to set work for KS3 students via the class charts app or Sparx.

“The College will remain open to all KS4 students (Years 10-11) on Tuesday January 13, who should arrive to College at the normal time, where they will be given details in their tutor groups about re-rooming for the day.

“Again, please be assured that all parts of the school that will be in use tomorrow will be warm and heated.

"However, I would remind all students to dress appropriately in warm clothing given the current temperatures outside.”

The message adds: “At this stage we expect to be fully operational and open to all students on Wednesday January 14, but we will contact you again to confirm this tomorrow.

“We apologise for the continued inconvenience this has caused.”
