Valuable rare breeds come to Melton from around the country

A vast array of valuable and rare breeds of British farm livestock went on exhibit and sale at Melton Cattle Market last week.

The Traditional and Native Breeds National Show took place on Friday and Saturday and saw a strong turn out of nearly 1,000 sheep, 40 cattle, and 60 pigs.

There was also more than 1,000 cocks and hens on show as well as some hatching eggs on show.

The event, which has been running since 2003, has established itself as a leading shop window for keepers of traditional native breeds and therefore attracted exhibitors and buyers from the north and south of the country.

Melton Cattle Market CEO Hugh Brown said: “This is the only place in the country where all farmers come together in one place at the same time to sell and show of their prize livestock. Melton is very luck to have it.

“The event is always so popular that you can’t get a hotel room in Melton over the course of the two days. Animals are brought along not necessarily to make a profit, but to carry on the bloodlines.

“Everyone had a great time and we’re already looking forward to next year, where we expect to get a lot more cattle due to getting a new building.”
