The options are: Pork Pie Way; River Eye Road; Wreake Road; Lazars Way; Wolds Way; Farrier Way; Victory Road; Military Way; Veteran Road.

The names were suggested by council officers, working with local councillors and partners.

They are based on Melton’s local history, surroundings and character. All shortlisted names meet the council’s rules and guidelines for street naming.

Councillor Adam Tilbury, cabinet lead member for highways and transport at County Hall, said: “We want residents to be part of this milestone.

"Melton Mowbray’s new distributor road marks a significant moment for the town, thanks to the council’s biggest ever transport investment and we want the community to share in that achievement.

"We’ve brought together a shortlist of names that celebrate Melton’s heritage and landscape.”

And the acting leader of Melton Borough Council, Councillor Margaret Glancy, commented: “We understand how important this new road is to our communities.

"It’s been a long journey, but we are glad we have been able to work with and support the county council to deliver this major infrastructure and investment project within our borough.

"It is a significant achievement and, once opened, the new road will help to ease congestion in Melton Mowbray’s busy town centre, and deliver the growth in our adopted Local Plan.

“We are keen for our residents to have their say on this important investment into the local area, and we encourage everyone to take part in the survey and help to choose a name that reflects Melton’s character and heritage.”

This is why the various options were chosen:

Pork Pie Way – reflects Melton Mowbray’s long standing national reputation as the home of the famous Melton Mowbray pork pie.

River Eye Road – comes from the River Eye which runs through Melton Mowbray and is an important local natural feature.

Wreake Road – taken from the River Wreake which flows close to Melton Mowbray and has shaped the local area over time.

Lazars Way – refers to nearby Burton Lazars which takes its name from the medieval Knights of St Lazarus, who had a significant historical presence in the area.

Wolds Way – refers to the nearby Wolds landscape reflecting the town’s rural setting and connections to the surrounding countryside.

Farrier Way – Farriers trained at the Melton Mowbray Defence Animal Training Regiment care for horses.

Victory Road – recognises Melton Mowbray’s historic links to national moments of victory and remembrance.

Military Way – reflects Melton Mowbray’s strong and long established links with the Armed Forces.

Veteran Road – recognises the contribution of veterans and highlights Melton Mowbray’s continuing military connections.

The name that receives the most votes will be used when formally naming the new road.

Once the poll has closed and the name is official, the council will confirm the chosen name. Street name signs will be installed as part of the usual process.

You have until midnight on Tuesday May 5 to cast your vote.
