Donations help support Melton Mencap in its 50th year

Donation totalling £1,500 have been given to Melton Mencap, which has supported people of all ages with learning disabilities and autism for 50 years.

Members of St Mary’s Freemasons Lodge, in Melton Mowbray, stepped in when the Chapel Street charity said it needed support to upgrade its computers and systems to meet modern guidelines.

David Alcraft, the lodge charity steward, visited the Mencap service to present a £1,000 cheque to the charity’s Natasha Laidler.

The charity was also successful in its application to this year’s Ragdale Hall Community Chest – receiving £500 to help buy a replacement specialist height-adjustable changing bed.

Finance officer, Alison Smith, said: "Our facility is a Registered Changing Places location.

"We are part of a vital national network of toilets that meet specific requirements for space and equipment, ensuring they are fit for purpose for individuals with complex needs.

“While we have maintained our current equipment carefully, it has been well-used for many years and is now reaching the end of its financially viable life.”

The Changing Places toilet at Melton Mencap is open to the entire community, as well as the 120 current service users.

A height-adjustable bed allows for safe transfers from wheelchairs, protecting the physical health of both the user and their carer.

The facility enables Melton to be an inclusive place to live, shop and visit and prevents many disabled people being otherwise confined to their homes.
