They were delighted when plans were refused by the borough council earlier this year to convert part of the Black Horse, at Grimston, into housing, which would have left a much smaller pub.

A group has been formed to explore buying the historic pub and run it under community ownership.

Mike Petty, who chairs the group, said: “There has been a fantastic response to our questionnaire, with 74 per cent of Grimston, Saxelbye and Shoby parish householders returning completed surveys, along with many also from Ab Kettleby, Wartnaby and Holwell.

“It showed 91 per cent indicated that it is important or very important to have a local pub in the community.”

A valuation inspector has visited the pub and the group say they will start fundraising when they know the outcome.

Mr Petty added, in his circular to group members: “Lots of great ideas have been put forward for activities and services that the community would like to see in the reopened pub.”
