Rare poultry breeds show rearranged for next month

Organisers hope to hold the popular annual Melton spring rare breeds poultry show next month after the ongoing Bird Flu restrictions caused the cancellation of the event, which was scheduled to be held on Saturday.

The provisional new date for the Spring Sale of Graded Traditional Pure and Rare Breed Poultry and Waterfowl is Saturday May 6, at Melton Cattle Market.

This is subject to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) lifting the ban on poultry being let out from netted runs.

Defra has suspended all poultry sales and shows since December, which has had an effect on footfall at Melton market.

The organisation said it would review the restrictions on the housing of poultry and sales events at the end of this month.

That is when it is hoped most wild birds will have migrated from the UK and ended the risk of spreading Bird Flu.

Large areas of Melton borough were designated high risk for the circulation of Bird Flu by Defra because of the promixity of large bodies of water, where wild birds gather.

Schedules for the rearranged rare breeds show are available online at www.meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk , from the office or by calling 01664 562971.
