It follows the release of information yesterday (Monday) by senior health officials that thousands of people could soon become infected next month if nothing is done.

Mr Johnson said in the House of Commons this afternoon that hospitality businesses must operate a table-only service.

Employees in pubs and restaurants must all also now wear face coverings, as well as passengers travelling in taxis.

The maximum number of people attending weddings will be reduced from 30 to 15 but 30 can still attend funerals.

Workers are being told to work at home if they can but those who cannot should stil attend their place of work.

The new tighter measures could be imposed for up to six months if the rate of infection is not brought under control, the Prime Minister said.
