Vale of Belvoir is gearing up for Viking Challenge

The event takes place on Sunday with proceeds to be split between Redmile School and the 2016 chosen charity, The Stroke Association.

Cyclists from all over the country have been descending on the Vale of Belvoir to take part in the event for 21 years and more than £490,000 has been raised in that time for the school and a series of charities.

Laura Brudenell White, who is helping to organise this year’s ride, said: “Approximately 1500 cyclists will be prepared to conquer the latest Viking Challenge over a 30km or a 50km circuit to raise funds for the school and The Stroke Association.

“Known for its challenging circuit across the historic Viking Way, participants are treated to chocolate, bananas, cake and pork pie across the route. The combination of mud, bikes, cake and pie is too good to resist!”

The challenge starts from the school at 8.30am and follows the local section of the Viking Way, an ancient track-way which originally linked Newark and Stamford.

Around 150 volunteers will be helping on the day and the starter of this year’s event will be Peggy Alcock, a Redmile resident and committe member, who suffered a stroke on the weekend of last year’s Viking Challenge.
