I, Daniel Blake (15) A searing indictment of the state of the British welfare system, this film is a passionate plea for social justice, bearing all the hallmarks of its thoughtful, highly political director. Daniel (Johns) is a friendly 59-year-old joiner who is unable to work due to bad health. However the Department of Work and Pensions overrides the doctor’s report and refuses to award benefits. Daniel must be seen to look for a job although, on doctor’s orders, he cannot accept any work. It’s an absurd predicament that reaches Kafkaesque proportions as the hero becomes buried in red tape and jobsworth employees. As characters try to help each other despite their own troubles, Loach also offers humour and hope. Friday at 6pm, Saturday at 7.45pm, Monday at 8.45pm, Tuesday at 2pm and Wednesday at 6pm.

The Light Between Oceans (12A)

Adapted from the smash-hit novel by M. L. Stedman, The Light Between Oceans is Cianfrance’s most ambitious work so far. The film is set in Western Australia just after the events of World War I and boasts a star-studded cast with Fassbender as the lighthouse keeper and Vikander as his wife. Desperate for a child, the couple are surprised and delighted when a lifeboat with a baby inside is washed up onto their small island. Their life together seems complete, but on the mainland Weisz, as Hannah Roennfeldt, is devastated and alone having lost her husband and child at sea. Stunningly photographed in Tasmania and Australia by genius up-and-coming cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, whose gorgeous work was last seen in Macbeth, The Light Between Oceans is a gripping drama with an unthinkable moral dilemma at its heart.

Trolls (U) The creators of such family friendly fare as Shrek and Alvin And The Chipmunks have delivered an irreverent animated comedy voiced by top names such as Gwen Stefani, James Corden and Anna Kendrick. The magical world of the eponymous, ever cheerful and indeed constantly singing Trolls is threatened by the gloomy Bergens, who frankly just want to eat them up. Co-directed by Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell, the Trolls’ hair-raising but comic adventures as they outwit their adversaries are set to a catchy original score by Justin Timberlake, who also voices one of our heroes. Saturday 12noon and Sunday at 12.15pm.
