The Pork Pie Pedal will take place on Saturday and aims to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Target Ovarian Cancer.

It’s a bike ride in quiet countryside, from Melton to Rutland Water, around the reservoir and back to Melton.

Their is a choice of route including 50,60 and 70 mile distances and it is suitable for all standards of riders, from cycle club members to people who will see the ride as a big personal challenge, and not as a race.

Olivia Stapleton, one of the organisers, said: “One of our friends and a participant and supporter in previous years asked us to consider an ovarian cancer charity in 2016. Anne, her sister, had recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was just starting her treatment. This seemed like a good choice to us and after looking at the different charities we choose Target Ovarian Cancer.

“The good news is that Anne has responded well to treatment. She will be with us on the day of the cycle and her husband and older children will be cycling.

“Also in January this year, Jolanta, a 19-year-old friend of ours, and the daughter of close friends and previous cyclists, died very suddenly of a rare form of leukaemia. She was an intelligent, caring and friendly young woman who was full of life and had spent one term at Sheffield University. Tragically she became ill and died very quickly.

“The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that feels very important for us to support, and we will be keeping Jolanta in our thoughts as we cycle this year.

“We hope you feel that this year’s charities are as worthy as we feel they are.”

In 2015 the event raised over £9,000 for Parkinson’s UK and Crohn’s and Colitis UK. Cyclists are asked to commit to a minimum donation or sponsorship of £30 in recognition of the work involved in organising the event. To register visit www.porkpiepedal.co.uk
