Participants sought to take part in Wymeswold's Tour de Wolds charity cycling event

The highlight of the cycling summer may well be the Tour de France but villagers in Wymeswold are organising a Tour de Wolds with the intention of recruiting as many riders as possible on Saturday, June 12.

The event is the brainchild of Wymeswold resident Adie Keogh, who is himself in remission after battling bowel cancer two years ago. Therefore, all proceeds from the ride will be donated to the Leicestershire based Hope Against Cancer charity.

There are three different routes available on the day, all starting and ending from the Burton Lane Playing Field in Wymeswold. There is a 10 mile route aimed at beginners and families, a 30 mile route for the more adventurous and a 60 mile cycle for hardened competitors.

The latter routes take in as many villages as possible with Wold in their name, such as Prestwold, Burton on the Wolds, Walton on the Wolds, Waltham on the Wolds and Willoughby on the Wolds.

Tour de Wolds organiser Adie said: “Two years ago I was diagnosed with bowel cancer but received wonderful treatment from both Leicester General and Leicester Royal hospitals. As part of my rehabilitation I took up cycling and have found it to be a great way of getting fit as well as enjoying our superb local countryside.

“I wanted to do something to help and support cancer research, so by putting on this event I hope as many people as possible will enjoy an organised ride around some of Leicestershire’s finest countryside, and they’ll also be raising funds for the excellent Hope Against Cancer charity.”

Registrations are already flooding in for each of the three routes and it’s easy to take part.
