Melton Theatre wants you to share your photos and memories as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations

Over the last four decades the theatre has proudly served the local community, not just by providing a rich variety of entertainment but also providing a platform for talented young local performers to flourish and helping to boost Melton’s tourism appeal and evening economy.

The Melton College Theatre, as it was known then, was officially opened on June 22, 1976, by the Duke of Rutland. It’s first performance ‘Exit Pursued by a Bear’ starred Polly James, of Liver Birds fame, Terrence Hardiman, of Softly Softly, and Peter Jeffrey, of The Power Game.

The theatre’s first season of shows also featured other star names including Prunella Scales and Timothy West with more big names to follow in their footsteps.

And to this day the theatre, which is run by Brooksby Melton College, continues to attract big name acts, with its 40th anniversary season no exception.

Melton Theatre co-ordinator Michael Harris said: “We’re proud to have been such a large part of the community in Melton for 40 years now and we hope this anniversary season has something for everyone to enjoy.

“Ultimately we are a community theatre. At the core of our continued success are our loyal front-of-house volunteer teams. Some of them have been with us for our full 40 years of presenting the best in community, college and touring theatre productions.

“We’ve had a remarkable few months, topped off by crowned ‘After Dark’ award winners at this year’s Melton Times Business Awards, but we couldn’t do it without the help of our customers.”

As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations the theatre wants past performers and customers to share their photos and memories of performances over the years.

Mr Harris added: “It paints a picture of what the theatre has been like over the past 40 years and gives an idea of the levels of service people have seen. It’s a way people can be a part of our celebrations.”
