John Ferneley College pupil Owen Blair has capped a superb cross country season by qualifying to run for his county.
Owen will represent Leicestershire in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at the Norfolk Showground, in Norwich, on Saturday, March 18.
He qualified by finishing runner-up in the Leicestershire and Rutland Schools Cross Country League.
The highlight of the season for Owen was winning race two in the league at Rutland Water, the first time he has ever claimed top spot on the podium.
The call-up marks the culmination of his main aim for the season, having been determined to make the step up to the county team after he was named as a reserve last year.
Owen’s silver medal was the highlight of a very successful cross country season for John Ferneley.
The Year 7 girls’ team were second in the league, while the junior boys’ team, of which Owen was a part, finished third.
The intermediate boys’ team were second in their league, edging out their B team into third.
It was the first time a John Ferneley B team has won a county league medal, underlining the strength in depth of runners in Years 10 and 11 at John Ferneley.
