A new policy for licensing taxis and private hire vehicles in the Melton borough has been drafted.

Residents are being asked to comment on a consultation into the proposals, which seek to further safeguard vulnerable passengers and increase safety for residents using these services.

Melton Borough Council has proposed the new Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy for the area after the government’s Department for Transport issued new guidance.

Councillor Alison Freer-Jones, portfolio holder for climate, access and engagement, which incorporates licensing and regulatory services, said: “We are committed to improving local services in the borough and when you get into a taxi you want that assurance that both the vehicle and the driver will be safe.

“We are proposing a number of changes to our taxi licensing policy which prioritise the safety of the public and would mean improved controls over both the vehicles and drivers operating across the borough.

“Whether you are a taxi user, driver or operator, it is important we hear from you, so please visit our online consultation and have your say.”

The consultation period closes at midnight on Wednesday, April 14.
