Leicestershire Police calls for volunteer cadet leaders to step forward

To accommodate the rise in numbers the force is seeking 20 more enthusiastic, committed cadet leaders to join the programme.

Cadets are aged between 13 and 17 years, and have a keen interest in policing. They play a vital role in helping the force to serve the communities of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

They are enrolled in the Volunteer Police Cadet (VPC) programme, which aims to promote a practical understanding of policing among young people and encourage a spirit of adventure.

Leicestershire Police’s Strategic Lead for Volunteers in Policing, Superintendent Martyn Ball, said: “I am immensely proud of our Volunteer Police Cadet programme. Over the years it has grown and grown and we need passionate people to help in its expansion. Becoming a cadet leader gives you the unique opportunity to make a real difference to the younger generations of the community. Join us in leading the programme, and be a part of something great.”

Lead Co-ordinator for the VPC programme Sergeant Graham said: “As a leader you will be valued and supported, and you will have the unique opportunity to develop yourself while providing inspiration and knowledge to many young people from our communities.”

The cadets get involved in anything from local events and festivals to leaflet drops and crime prevention initiatives, and they give young people a direct chance to be heard within their communities.

Special Constable Sam Watson, who has been a Cadet Leader for more than five years, said: “Many of the cadets share the same aspirations as I did at that age, and it’s great to help them progress both in their policing and personal journeys. I would strongly encourage anyone who has an interest in the programme to take on this rewarding role.”

Cadet leaders are expected to:

* regularly attend VPC evenings (approx. three hours per week);

* help plan the VPC programme in support of the Lead Coordinator;

* actively support Social Action volunteering in the community and supervise cadets;

* be a positive role model to the cadets.
