A packed church in Asfordby enjoyed a concert of piano music which raised hundreds of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The event, organised by local piano and clarinet teacher Jill Wallis, featured performances from her talented pupils aged 12-17 who entertained family and friends.

It was a very moving occasion for all involved as young Melton man Sam Mayfield (23), who is battling bowel cancer, attended the concert along with family and friends just a day after coming out of hospital having had emergency surgery after getting sepsis from a leak in his bowel.

The concert, which was held in Asfordby Church on Thursday night, raised £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

As previously reported in the Melton Times inspirational Sam has been sharing his story and day-to-day highs and lows via his Facebook blog entitled ‘My Cancer Journey’. As well as keeping family and friends informed of his day-to-day feelings, Sam’s blog has also helped to raise awareness of cancer in young people.

Jill, whose son is friends with Sam, said: “All of the piano concert participants played beautifully and we raised £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust which was brilliant.

“Everyone was very moved that Sam and his family were able to attend. He truly is an inspiration. Many of his friends travelled from different parts of the country to share in the evening, three of them playing piano too.

“Asfordby Church and Jeff Pilkington Birch (piano tuner) waived their fees so that the Teenage Cancer Trust could benefit fully from the proceeds. Many thanks for their generosity.”

Sam, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January, said in one of his recent posts that he was ‘very nervous and scared’ since getting back home from hospital but was trying to stay positive, adding that he ‘couldn’t thank the nurses and surgeons looking after him enough.’

Earlier this month Sam got some excellent news from his surgeon after she got lab results back from tumour.

Sam said: “My amazingly wonderful surgeon said that the chemotherapy and radiotherapy had all but shrunk it to nothing when she removed it. All that was left was a few little cancer cells but the margins she took either side came back all clear. Amazing news! My lymph glands were all clear as well.

“Technically I’m cancer free but just a precautionary blast of chemotherapy should destroy anything and everything!”
