Melton firefighters tackle four suspected arson attacks within hours

Two crews from Melton were called to a garage fire on St John’s Road, Asfordby Hill, at 8.30pm last night (Monday).

A pile of rubbish next to a row of garages had been set on fire, with the blaze spreading into one of the garages.

Firefighters tackled the blaze using a hose reel and a thermal imaging camera, putting the fire out just after 8.50pm and then damping down inside the garage which suffered 30 per cent damage.

Just after 1am this morning (Tuesday) firefighters were called out to Drummond Walk in Melton where two industrial size wheelie bins were well alight in the middle of the road.

About one hour and a half later firefighters were called back out to Drummond Walk with two more wheelie bins found well alight inside a compound.

And at about 5.20am this morning (Tuesday) there was another call, this time to a sofa on fire in the front garden of a property in Rockingham Drive, Melton.

Melton firefighter Scott Smith said: “They were all deliberate fires which the police will hopefully be looking into. There were suspicious characters hanging around.

“While we’re dealing with these types of fires it means we’re not available for more serious incidents.

“Another concern is the fact that these fires were so close to other buildings as well.”
