Five members of staff from Bellway East Midlands, which is building new homes at Roman Gate just around the corner, picked up tree loppers, spades and rakes to assist in the clean-up job at the church in Leicester Road.

The volunteers cleared out shrubbery from a footpath and moved soil and debris from around the perimeter of the church. The team was led by Andrew Pollard, adoptions engineer at Bellway East Midlands, and included inspections manager Ashley Woodman, site operatives Petra Mason and Mick Littlewood and PA Ayesha Broome. Also joining them for the clear up was Alf Kelle of AK Lawnscapes who carries out landscaping works for Bellway in the region.

Reverend Sam Dunn, from Melton Mowbray Baptist Church, said: “We are very grateful for all the work that Bellway has done for us on our grounds and for the good-humoured relationships that we have shared with the firm as they have built homes close to our church.

“The grounds look smarter, and it is going to be considerably easier now for us to secure our site. Grateful thanks to all involved.”

Andrew Pollard, Adoptions Engineer from Bellway East Midlands, said: “Most of us pass Melton Mowbray Baptist Church as we make our way to and from Roman Gate, so it was great to take time out to visit it and meet the people there.

“Reverend Dunn and his team made our staff very welcome and it felt good to be able to help to make a difference through the efforts of our willing volunteers. The team got stuck in and cleared a lot of debris and unwanted foliage to make room for additional planting this spring and for the erection of a fence around part of the perimeter.

“I think it is fair to say that the grounds at the church are looking a lot tidier thanks to our team. I must congratulate and thank them for stepping up and giving up their time to help the local church.”

Bellway East Midlands is building 217 new homes at Roman Gate, off Leicester Road, Melton Mowbray.
