The Bookshop (PG)

The Bookshop sees tensions and conflict in a small Suffolk coastal town in 1959 when a middle-aged widow Florence Green sets up a bookshop in a derelict property. Florence is a newcomer and she meets with resistance from the community. Exposing the locals to the boundary-pushing words of Nabokov’s Lolita and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is not her only crime; retired general’s wife and busy-body Mrs Gamart had other plans for the property and, beneath a show of welcome, musters all her social and political connections to ensure that Florence’s fortunes dwindle. But one customer, recluse and voracious reader Mr Brundish, has a strong dislike of the locals and, when he takes Florence’s side, the pair strike up a sympathetic alliance all for the love of books. Based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s 1978 Booker-shortlisted novel. Friday, Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday at 6pm, Sunday at 7.30pm, Monday at 8.30pm and Tuesday at 2pm and 5pm.

Feeling empowered, Renée takes on the world with a new-found confidence and sets out to live fearlessly. But what happens when she realises her appearance never changed? Writers of The Vow and He’s Just Not That Into You, Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein make their directorial debuts with this feelgood comedy that celebrates the fact that true beauty is not skin deep.
